As part of the Empower Ukraine and bridgeUkraine.org initiative, we successfully delivered another CPD session dedicated to one of the most costly threats to infrastructure worldwide – corrosion.
On 17 November, Dr Fuad Khoshnaw (De Montfort University, UK), editor of the Elsevier series “Corrosion Atlas Case Studies”, led an online lecture titled “Corrosion – the Silent Enemy of Recovery and Infrastructure”. The session brought together Ukrainian engineers, researchers, and infrastructure managers to explore why corrosion causes trillions of dollars in losses globally and how it can undermine reconstruction efforts if not properly addressed.
Participants learned about the interaction between corrosion, fatigue and creep in critical assets; modern protection strategies including advanced coatings, cathodic protection and AI-driven monitoring; and the links between corrosion management, safety and long-term economic efficiency at national scale. The lecture was delivered with simultaneous English–Ukrainian interpretation to ensure accessibility for a broad professional audience.
